People of Freedom - Sean

Meet Sean, one of the co-founders of the Freedom Café here in Durham!
Sean started off as a General Manager and Strategic Planner in the very beginning of the café, and is currently Interim Chair of the Board of Directors. He first got involved through weekly discussion groups at a local church, where members grappled with ideas of global injustice and wanted to find a way to make a difference. And so, the Freedom Café was created as a safe place to have those tough conversations and facilitate community action.

When asked about his main takeaways from his time with the café, Sean said, "I learned that there's a lot of thirst for knowledge and energy to learn how to live better lives, in so many shapes and forms, at least in our local community. I also learned that a few dedicated, sacrificing folks can make an outsized impact in their communities and can help bring people forward into the future."

Looking back over the years, the café has really shown Sean the power of community. His favorite part of the Freedom Café is that it blends so many interests, like music and arts, coffee, social justice, and more! According to Sean, the café has something for everyone, and encourages anyone to get involved if they are inspired by it. He would also love to chat with anyone who has an interest in spreading the café's mission across the country and potentially the world.
