Barriers to Buying Consciously Sourced Products

During a visit with UNH Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, "Business for People, Planet, and Profits" class, we asked students to consider, "What barriers keep student from buying consciously sourced products?" Their responses (below) echo the challenges we all face when seeking to be savvy shoppers who support fair wages, sustainability and integrity throughout the supply chain.

1. Clarity - It’s not always clear what is or is not conscious, fair or ethical - Beyond knowing products with clear supply chain exploitation, labels can be confusing and do not span a full range of food, beverage and retail.

2. Cost - Most folks are only willing to pay about 10% more than they would for a comparable item.

3. Accessibility - If a conscious product is not being offered locally in the food, beverage and retail spaces you frequent, it's tough to make conscious choices a habit.

4. Convenience - Sometimes you just need to grab something quickly to meet a need and don’t have time to plan out a conscious purchase.
